When I was going through some very dark times, Don Miguel Ruiz was my voice of reason. His writing showed me the way to peace in my mind. I just re-read The Four Agreements. This was the first time since I began my journey after divorce. It was amazing how many lessons I have applied to my life since the first time I read the book over 9 years ago. The first time I read the book, I wasn’t ready to apply the ideas. The second time, which was followed by multiple read throughs, I was so desperate, I saw the importance of changing for my sanity. Now, I get to look back and see how far I have come and get some reminders to keep me going. This is a book I will continue to recommend to anyone who wants to live a more peaceful life. He repeats concepts and ideas in multitude of ways. This gives the reader the best chance of being able to absorb the material. The better I am at applying the agreements to my life, the more amazing my adventures become.  This is part one of a three part series. Next up, The Mastery of Love. The final installment will be quotes from The Voice of Knowledge: A Practical Guide to Inner Peace.

THE FOUR AGREEMENTS

  1. BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD
  2. DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY
  3. DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS
  4. ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST

-Don Miguel Ruiz

Here are a few quotes that helped me see the importance of improving the way I was treating myself:

“If someone abuses you a little more than you abuse yourself, you will probably walk away from that person” (p. 20).

“If you abuse yourself very badly, you can even tolerate someone who beats you up, humiliates you, and treats you like dirt” (p. 20).

“The more self-love we have, the less we will experience self-abuse” (p. 20).

There are so many powerful messages  throughout the book.  I hope these will encourage you to pick it up for the first time or for a re-read. It is important to get the reminders, because we always have something we can work on.

Here are a few on the applying the agreements:

First Agreement

“When you are impeccable, you take responsibility for your actions, but you do not judge or blame yourself” (p.31).

“You will only receive a negative idea if your mind is fertile ground for that idea” (p.43).

Second Agreement

“Nothing other people do is because of you” (p.48).

“Your point of view is something personal to you. It is no one’s truth but yours” (p.52)

“Do not expect people to tell you the truth because they also lie to themselves. You have to trust yourself and choose to believe or not to believe what someone says to you” (p. 57).

Third Agreement

“It is always better to ask questions than make an assumption, because assumptions set us up for suffering” (p.65).

“We make the assumption that everyone sees life the way we do” (p.69).

Fourth Agreement

“Doing your best is taking the action because you love it, not because you’re expecting a reward” (p. 79).

“Learning from your mistakes means you practice, look honestly at the results, and keep practicing. This increases your awareness” (p.81).

“Without action upon an idea, there will be no manifestation, no results, and no reward” (p.82)

Enjoy the journey!
