The Box: A Writer’s Dream

Did you know that when some authors publish a book they receive a box of their books before it is released? There are all kinds of videos online showing this magical reveal of the author seeing, smelling, touching, and listening to the sounds as the pages move through their fingers.  A writer’s dream comes to life before your eyes. Many authors have told me that there is nothing like that moment. All the time, work, love, devotion, and passion that were poured into every page are now a real physical entity. 

As I began my journey writing a book, I witnessed some of these videos. I could feel the joy through the screen. I pictured myself one day opening this mysterious box. At the time, I had no idea what the book cover would look like or even what the book would be about. The only thing I knew is that I wanted the title of the book to be, Letters from A Better Me

Now in front of me sits this box of books begging to be opened, but like a first date, kiss, and well you-know… I want this moment to be as fitting to the way I live my life as possible, so I will wait to open the box in the place that gives me the most inspiration. It’s my way of returning the AWE to nature, because it is in nature that most of my clarity comes from. Being out there will also help calm my nerves as I do my first-ever public Facebook Live.

Life is made up of moments that are a combination of everything we put into them. Some of the emotions I had to stir up in Part I to make this journey as authentic as possible were very trying for me. I had to go back into traumatic events to remember feelings and actions. I needed to tap into a time where I had NO self-worth. Then I got to move from those dark times of struggle into the transformation process, which fills me with such joy and AWE that I spent many hours crying tears of joy as I typed page after page.

 This is one of those moments that is like taking a first step. Letters from A Better Me is my first book, so I’ve never experienced anything like this before. Just like a proud mama wants to capture those first steps, I want this moment to stay with me forever.  

Dreams do come true. First we have to make a choice to start doing the work to draw them closer. Otherwise they will just stay out of reach.

36 More Days Until the Release of Letters from A Better Me

The Writer in Me

Middle school was where I truly began to appreciate the power of the pen. I honestly thought I was stupid until essay questions became more standard on tests. The biggest complaint I would get is there were too many details, but little did they know that was just my divergent brain taking in the limitless possibilities.  Language Arts was the one class I could count on to disappear in a piece of paper. 

Freshman year in high school, I just got out of a treatment program.  I loved it there. I felt like I was in the safest place in the world. I knew what was expected out of me. I was given more responsibilities and privileges the harder I worked, and I got consequences when I broke the rules. I knew what to expect from the time the morning alarm sounded until lights out. To me, it felt like I was wrapped in a cocoon protected from the outside world. 

Leaving the safety of the program was overwhelming. I was used to sitting in my little cubicle quietly doing my schoolwork—No opinions, no discussions, just reading and answering questions. There were no judgments from other students because none of us were on the same material. Even then, I loved learning. There was a safety buried somewhere within the knowledge. 

My freshman Language Arts teacher assigned us a poem about a flower. I wish I had kept that poem. It must have been dark because somehow he could see how I was feeling through what I wrote. He pulled me aside and told me that poetry was like a secret language I could use to get out how I was really feeling. That’s when I started writing poem after poem. 

Poetry helped me find the rhythm in my words. That skill would pay off in many ways through school and through out my multitude of careers. I much prefer to write out what I’m thinking and take people on a journey through the words.

My senior year of high school, I had all my necessary credits to graduate, so I took an independent study of poetry. Many people thought I would pick this one L.A. teacher whom everyone loved. I picked the one that most people dreaded and feared. She was tough, and I knew she wouldn’t let me get away with anything. I wanted to be pushed beyond my comfort zone.

By the time my senior year ended, I had written over one hundred poems. They went to some of my darkest places and helped me to process some of the traumas that tore up my soul. Poetry was the safest place for me to explore my darkest corners. 

By the time I was twenty, I was writing training programs. By twenty-four, I wrote a monthly sales column in an indoor tanning magazine, and by twenty-five I was writing business proposals for more money than I could imagine at the time. Yet, the writing didn’t ever touch me like the dance I had with poetry.

Then just like that, the darkness crept in and I somehow I forgot how to expose it to the light. I forgot how to dance. The dark period would last for years. Then through a series of traumatic events, I picked up my pen and began to write and write, but instead of poetry it was letters. I would write and burn letters to process all my pain. 

With my writing came more healing than I ever knew I needed. I wrote my way into and through college loving every minute of it. I learned so much about technical writing. I thought it would be fun to take a creative non-fiction course. Little did I know it would be one of my most challenging courses, but I was bound and determined to do my best. I sat in a room full of the most talented CREATIVE WRITING MAJORS— I a Human Development major. Let’s just say, I had to REALLY learn to be more flexible with my writing fast. I felt so over my head. They didn’t let me drown, and I’m so grateful for each and every critique. I felt honored to hear, see, and feel the talent in that room. With that, I learned how to dance a different dance of words. 

FromALovingPlace.com was born from deep inside of me; a calling from my soul that has allowed me to continue my dance with words. The writer in me calls me to write letters, gratitude lists, blogs, sayings, articles, and now books.  My dance begins the second my fingers touch the keys. I started today’s post not having any idea what was going to come out, I just started to dance and my fingers took over. 

I allow my passion to take me on this journey daily and I feel full and abundant.

Day 90: Committing to Lead by Example

Dear Universe,

Today, I commit to doing my best. I commit to being the change. I commit to leading by example. I commit to doing the work daily to shine my light. I commit to the life of a better me.

I choose perspectives of truth that open me to experiencing love. I choose to perceive my reality through gratitude/abundance. I choose self-care to ensure that I’m giving my best to myself and others. I choose presence to pull me out of my story and give me a path to peace.

I trust the Divine Energy that lives inside of me to lead me to where I’m supposed to be. I trust that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be with every breath that I take. In each moment the Divine gives me opportunity to see someone’s light and/or shine my own. In each moment the Divine gives me opportunity to shine my light or embrace the darkness inside of me in order to learn and grow. I get to choose. I choose to take responsibility for my darkness and turn on my light switch to expose any toxic build-up so that I can clean it up and keep my light on.

My soul’s purpose is to live life from a loving place. My strength comes from the love within me. My perseverance and courage come from being face to face with my own darkness. My empowerment comes from taking responsibility for what energy I CHOOSE to project to the word. My wisdom comes from my openness to learn and grow.  My beauty comes from shining my light.  I will lead by example. I will be the change that the world deserves.

  2. I’m grateful for the transformations and abundance that has come from staying committed to gratitude, love, light, and abundance.

Day 85: Giving People Tools to Build From A Loving Place

On this 90-Day A Better Mejourney we have covered a lot of ground. We have looked at what holds us back (Part I), what launches us forward (Part II), and now we are well into living the journey (Part III). In these final days of the journey we will be covering how to consciously project love (light), engage in what we stand for, embracing what we manifest, being the change, and leading by example.  There is one tool very important tool you will need to engage if you want the best results and to completely submerge into life as a better you—CREATIVITY!

Take in the definition of creativity above given by Dr. Davidovich Ockuly. REALLY take it in. If you have any thoughts or perspectives of truth within you that tells you that you aren’t a creative person, read this definition again and again. YOU ARE CREATIVE! Each of us has a purpose where we need our creativity to shine through in order to bring our purpose into fruition. We make our soul’s purpose come alive when we engage in our creativity.

When we block our creativity with beliefs such as, I’m not a creative person. We sabotage our gifts; we create unnecessary blocks for ourselves. We conjure a struggle where their doesn’t need to be one. We are creative. We were made creative. We just need to find our own unique creativity. When we do that—

We find our power! We use creativity to better our lives and give others seeds to better theirs on a daily basis. What we do may not be a piece of fine art, a best-selling book, viral memes or videos, mind-blowing photography, a jaw-dropping performance, and/or an award-winning garden. We use creative to project and manifest AWE in our lives. The work is engaging in our creativity.

If we want to give people tools to build from a loving place, we not only have to be creative, we have to inspire the creativity within them. We don’t know what someone else’s creative path is, but what we do know is if we help others see themselves clearly, we are giving them the tools to go within and see their gifts. Here’s an example: I’ve read countless books, gone to thousands of workshops and classes, had many challenging life experiences, practiced spirituality and religion, and experimented with using my creative mind in all kinds of way. I needed to do all those things to create the 90-Day A Better Me Series. I had no idea when I started my blog that I would be led to write this. It just kept unfolding, because I trusted the process. I was open to the possibility of giving others tools to live better. I had to go through the process to see the possibilities in order to write everything that has come to me.

When we engage our creativity our minds are open. When we suppress our creativity our minds close. We don’t see possibility. If we don’t see possibility we are stuck in the cycle of insanity. When we are open—WE LEARN, GROW, AND EXPAND. When we do that, we have the ability to give people tools to build from a loving place.

Day 66: Quieting My Mind

Dear Self,

I’m committing a minimum of 30 minutes a day to quieting my mind. I’m making the conscious choice to MAKE the time to de-clutter my thoughts to MAKE space for conscious creation of the things I want more of in my life. I’m choosing to free write, doodle, and consciously drink my water for 45 days straight (See list of items to choose from by clicking here).

Each day I’m committing to sit down and TAKE the time to SLOW DOWN. I want to consciously create my life like it is a work of art. I can’t do that with all the clutter. Otherwise it will just be scribble over scribble with no color except for black and white. I’m choosing to make the effort to re-train my brain to work for me and the life I’m creating.

This time I’m making is essential for my well-being. There is so much going on in my head and in the world that I’m feeling overloaded trying to process it all. I feel like it’s beginning to fry my circuits and creating a numbing effect on my life. I want and deserve better and I’m going to treat myself that way. I want to create consciously. I want to live consciously.

Today I’m Grateful

  1. I’m grateful for the moments my mind is quiet.
  2. I’m grateful for the opportunity to make time to focus on quieting my mind.
  3. I’m grateful at the art I create with a quiet mind.

Day 66: Quieting the Mind for Conscious Creation

Quieting our minds can be one of our biggest challenges, but if we do the work— It comes with the greatest rewards. In a quiet mind we can separate all the clutter and distractions. We hear and see messages clearly. We create consciously. You know those signs we ask the Divine Creator for? We only can see them when we slow down our minds.

We actually have the ability to change our neural pathways when we are able to calm our minds on a regular basis. This means those unhealthy messages that have been feeding us and forming the way our mind behave can be changed to create new and healthier connections in the brain. Scientists have been studying the effects of regular meditation on the brain— The results are incredible. So all the mindfulness, meditation, and quieting of the mind messages have scientific proof of effectiveness.  We are literally retraining our brains to operate on a higher level. I find that pretty amazing. This is proof that we have choices that will make things better for us, and it starts with our mindset. We have to choose not to be a prisoner of our thoughts and beliefs that keep us trapped in an inner life we aren’t happy with.

Some people think of quieting the mind as meditation, and instantly the walls go up saying I can’t meditate. We’ve talked about the word, can’t. It’s an excuse not to keep trying. The word can’t is a choice to be stuck where we are. There are plenty of ways to quiet the mind that are building the muscle to be able to meditate and/or keep the mind quiet for longer time periods. I’ve brought some of these up in different parts of the series, but they are worth repeating.

10 Techniques to Quiet the Mind

  1. When you are using the toilet, take the time to be conscious of your breath. Make it a practice that every time you use the toilet you take three long inhales and three long exhales… This is what I did to start MAKING the time for quieting the mind.
  2. When you’re in the shower, be conscious of your breaths in and out. Then imagine the water touching you is the love of the Divine cleansing and clearing all the chaos and clutter away. Feel the love washing over you in your silence.
  3. Take a walk in nature or spend time in with the Earth in some way. If you can keep your mind on what you are seeing and feeling, you can help quiet the clutter in the mind. Really look at the nature and feel the energy coming from the Earth. Let your mind be focused on what you are looking at and touching. Embrace your senses.
  4. Lie on the ground and really look at the sky. Do you remember trying to figure out what animals clouds looked like? Or connect the dots with the stars? Focus on breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth and be childlike in your exploration. You will notice the more you can focus on this, the clutter in the mind dissipates.
  5. When you are exercising, focus on your breathing and being one with your body as you move. Pay close attention to your form and make sure your breaths are even as you move. NO holding your breath. Pay attention to the flow of your body during transitions in movement.
  6. Consciously drink a whole glass of water. See, feel, taste, hear, and smell the water moving with each sip. It helps me to add  a little flavored vinegar, lemon, cucumber, herbs, or essential oils to help me stay fully conscious of the experience.
  7. Get a meditation application, CD, YouTube, etc. on your phone and start practicing. If one doesn’t work for you, try another. Start slow if you are challenged. What time did you start and when did your mind start moving into the clutter. Then find meditations for that length of time and work your way up. Don’t beat yourself up over your mind drifted. You can see the thought come up in your mind and watch it float by like a balloon and release it. Don’t try to force your mind not to let the thoughts in, just simply let them pass by and visualize them floating off.
  8. Free writing is one of my favorite techniques. There are many names for this type of writing. Here is the method that works best for me: Set a timer for 20-30 minutes. Ask the Universe a question, say a prayer, write down a quote that inspires you, or give your mind a topic and just start writing. Don’t think or plan what you are going to write, don’t edit any words that are coming to the page, just write without trying to steer your thoughts. Keep writing until your timer is up or just keep writing if you are in a flow that the words are just coming to you without any effort. Once your mind starts trying to control the writing after the timer goes up, stop! The more you do this kind of writing the more you will be consciously creating. Many of my blogs are written like this. I actually do my best writing when I let my conscious energy flow. I only edit when the whole piece is complete.
  9. Doodle, doodle, and doodle some more. If you struggle with meditation, try listening to meditation music or a guided meditation while you doodle. Simply focus on breathing and letting your hand be led to just create the shapes and words that flow into stream of consciousness. Doodling has been scientifically proven to help focus the mind (the research is easily accessible on-line, just in case you ever have a teacher complaining about your child is doodling).
  10. Create a free mind; free flow art piece, creative movement, and/or musical masterpiece. Like the writing, set a timer. Give yourself a minimum of 20-30 minutes. Ask the Universe a question, say a prayer, look at a picture that inspires you, listen to a song without lyrics that inspires you, and/or just take three long deep breaths in and out. Now start creating without any thinking, planning or editing. See what comes up. You may be amazed in what you create. Some of the most mesmerizing music and art was created in free flow energy.

When we allow ourselves the time and space to quiet the mind, we start consciously creating new ways of thinking, believing, living, choosing, processing, expressing, loving, visualizing, experiencing, flowing, being, problem-solving, and on and on the list goes. The possibilities are endless once we quiet the mind for conscious creation. Now, if you are truly interested in changing your life, take one to three of the items on the list and do it for a minimum of 45-Days. You will be SHOCKED at the results. Like I’ve said before, transformation takes commitment and work. We have to consciously choose to MAKE the time.

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the journey of A Better Me. This letters piece of the journey is about connecting to the material in the 90-Day A Better Me Series. One of the things I’ve learned in my experience is that if I can’t make the journey personal, it’s not my journey. I won’t absorb the material in the same way as I do if I’m truly connected to it.

Since I’ve re-written my own story again and again using letters, I wanted to pass on one of the most essential tools in my own tool box. I’ve been amazed at what writing letters has done in my life. This helped me more than just journaling because writing a letter to myself or someone else gets me to engage deeper. The letters become personal contracts to live better.  I fully commit to feeling through whatever is going on inside of me at the time. I found that to be an AMAZING healing and transformative tool. Writing letters helps me to remember that I’m writing my own story. I need to commit to being the leading role.

Part I of the series is meant to stir up your emotions. If the program is working, you will get triggered. You will see yourself more openly. You will have opportunities to make better choices today. This journey is a process. In Part I, I’m peeling back the layers to expose the toxic muck that is keeping you from living your best life. In Part II, I help you to heal and strengthen. In Part III, you will get tools galore on how to grow and expand y to be the best version of yourself. Your relationships will shift and change as you take this journey. Trust the path!

I hope that if you stick to this journey, you will get what you need to become the best version of yourself, the program opens you up to see signs, guidance, teachers, and/or students. This is just the beginning. If you need extra guidance, I have a program that acts as a supplement to any personal development program you are using and/or want to start using.
